Many people can lose weight successfully through a combination of diet and exercise.
Some, though, have trouble keeping those pounds off. If you're morbidly obese and have
tried everything without success, you may want to consider weight-loss surgery at TMC.
Drop pounds, get healthier
Weight-loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, is
an important option if you have a body mass index
(BMI) of 40 or more. This includes men who are
about 100 pounds overweight or women who are
about 80 pounds overweight.
Many patients can lose up to 60 percent of
excess weight within the first 12 to 24 months --
and keep it off. Weight-loss surgery also can
partially or completely resolve health problems like
high cholesterol, sleep apnea or diabetes. Benefits
include an improved body image, increased activity
levels, higher self-esteem and better health.
Change your lifestyle
Weight-loss surgery is not a quick-fix solution, however. Patients need to eat healthy,
exercise and engage in lifelong follow-up and nutritional support.
Patients approved for surgery may undergo adjustable gastric banding, a procedure
where an adjustable silicone band is wrapped around the upper portion of the stomach.
The band creates a small pouch, so patients feel full after eating less.
